Material from Nazi period includes reports on Jewish situation and American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee activity, including files on Kristallnacht, 1938-1939; transfer of funds, including "Haavara" arrangements to transfer funds to Palestine, 1935-1941; aid to canteens, including Juedische Heimspeisung, Berlin; importation of kosher meat, 1936-1938; emigration, including Trans-Siberian route, Palestine, 1933-1935, including illegal and Youth Aliyah (preparation for moving to Palestine) and hachsharah (agricultural training in preparation for moving to Palestine); loan funds, 1934-1939; and German refugees abroad, 1933-1942. Organizations represented include Hilfsverein der Juden in Deutschland; Reichsvertretung der deutschen Juden (later Reichsvertretung der Juden in Deutschland, Reichsvereinigung der Juden in Deutschland), 1933-1943; Zentral Ausschuss der deutschen Juden fuer Hilfe und Aufbau, 1933-1938; and HICEM, 1934-1942. The Hilfsverein der Juden in Deutschland (Jewish Aid in Germany) was an organisation established by German Jews in 1901 to engage in social welfare and educational activities among needy Jews. It remained in operation until 1941, and during the Nazi period it assisted German Jews trying to emigrate.
